As part of her legacy to the Teaneck Community, contributions were made to fund a scholarship in Theresa’s name. We would like to give special thanks to all those friends and family who donated to the Theresa C. Delaney Memorial Scholarship Fund. The Theresa C. Delaney Scholarship Fund raised over $16,000 in 2021 for deserving Teaneck High School students in need of assistance with college funding.

Awards For Community Service

Theresa was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She graduated from Temple University in 1964 with a dual BS in Education and Spanish. She attended Middlebury College’s prestigious Summer Immersion Program for Spanish during the summers of 1966 and 1967 and continued her Spanish studies in Mexico.  Theresa began her teaching career in the city of Philadelphia where she worked for 5 years and taught Spanish when she moved to the NYC area at Bay Ridge HS in Brooklyn.  She continued to teach for many years as an Adult Education Spanish teacher at night in Ridgefield Park, NJ. She was also a Spanish teacher at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Tenafly, NJ. While raising her family she continued as a substitute Spanish teacher in the Teaneck school district as well as a tutor for the homebound in the Teaneck Schools.  

For many years Theresa was an active and dedicated volunteer in the Teaneck Community. She was generous with her time working to benefit the local community, in particular the Teaneck Public Schools. She served as Vice President in charge of fundraising for the PTO/ PTA’s in Bryant, Longfellow, Hawthorne,Thomas Jefferson and in Teaneck High School. In these positions she devoted many hours to assist the schools in their funding of many programs to benefit Teaneck students. Her volunteer positions were many and included serving for over 12 years as Treasurer of the Teaneck Student Loan Association and serving as a member of the Board of the Teaneck Student Loan Association for the past 30 years. Theresa was a volunteer with Teaneck Community Scholarship, which plays an integral part in helping deserving seniors in high school to help pay for their first year of college. She began interviewing for Teaneck Community Scholarship in 1980 for the Bryant School PTO and continued through all of the schools that her children attended. She was asked to serve on the Board of Community Scholarship and served as the Selections Chair for over 11 years. Theresa enjoyed all of her volunteer work and in particular her role with Teaneck Community Scholarship, which enabled her to stay connected to the students of Teaneck and has allowed her to be a part of helping deserving Teaneck students fulfill their educational goals.  For over 40 years Theresa was committed to serving the needs of the students and families in Teaneck as a long time resident of the Teaneck Community.
